So the news headlines might say. The province of Gauteng in which Johannesburg (Joburg) lies is having a fuel supply problem.
We are the smallest province in the country but contribute the largest percentage of South Africa’s GDP. The problem that surfaced yesterday is that the petroleum industry and its union have not yet managed to negotiate a wage increase, and so:
the union has gone on strike,
union members drive the petrol trucks,
without drivers the supply of fuel to petrol stations has dropped,
people are panic buying and draining the petrol stations,
petrol pumps are running dry,
people panic about petrol running out and fill up when they can,
people make jokes about “this is what it’s like in Zim”.
I am wondering whether I have enough fuel in my car to get me over the weekend … got to go!
